About Martin Birchall

An award winning press photographer with more than 35 years front line experience in the photography industry.

Lancashire born. Martin started his working career as a trainee photographer and B/W printer at The Bolton Evening News in the 1970’s. Martin completed the NCTJ Press Photographers Proficiency Test passing with distinction and soon gained a reputation for his creative style of work. Martin worked as a full time staff photographer at the Bolton Evening News for many years winning awards along the way.

Career History

Moving on to the Liverpool Echo and Daily Post as a staff photographer in the 1990’s Martin became one of the country’s top award winning press photographers winning the prestigious British Photographer of the Year award along with the regional title award.

Among Martin's many accolades, he represented the UK at the Fuji Film European Press Awards in Istanbul, the highest honour achieved by any UK press photographer. He was also Nikon Regional Photographer of the Year Merseyside and Cheshire Photojournalist of the Year has had six nominations for the British Picture Editors’ Association’s industry ‘Oscars’, BT News Photographer of the Year and won the North West Guild of Editors photographer of the Year awards six times.


Martin is also a well-established lecturer in photography media studies, giving guest lectures at the University of Central Lancashire, and John Moores University Liverpool.

In his career Martin has had his work published in newspapers and magazines local national and International publications.

Current Work

Now working in Corporate and PR photography across the North West producing images to showcase clients needs.
